Fertility Treatment: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF is a common treatment for infertility, which involves removing eggs from your ovaries and mixing them with sperm in a laboratory. The eggs are fertilized in the dish, and ‘in vitro’ means ‘in glass.’

A complete cycle of IVF takes from 4 to 6 weeks. The actual egg retrieval and fertilization takes about half a day, and the embryos culture in the lab for 2 to 5 days.

Once a pregnancy has occurred, doctors will regularly check on the baby’s growth via ultrasound.  Children conceived by IVF exhibit no long-term problems or complications, and are just as healthy as those born from natural conception.
