Dealing With the Emotions of IVF

The decision to start a family is a big one, and it should not be taken lightly. Imagine how distressing it would be to find out after deciding that you wish to start a family that it isn’t going to “just happen” as it does so often for others. There is still hope though. Through IVF you can still have that family you desire.

Emotional ride

Once you have spoken to your fertility doctor and have learned what to expect physically with IVF treatments, you should prepare yourself for the emotional aspect.

Beyond the fact that infertility and IVF procedures can be an emotional experience unto themselves, you also need to understand that the medications used for the IVF treatments can cause your hormones to take a ride, and along with them your emotions.

You are not alone

Keep in mind though that during these difficult times you never have to be alone with your worries and fears. There are support groups both online and in person that you can join and gain emotional support from people that are going through, or have gone through what you are going through.

You can also receive beneficial guidance from a personal therapist if you are uncomfortable with airing your personal feelings among a group of strangers. Friends and family can often be a valuable emotional crutch when you need someone to talk to.

They may not fully understand what you are going through but they love and care about you and so will lend a sympathetic ear in your times of need. Whichever path you choose it is wise not to bottle up these emotions but rather let them out so you can deal with them.

Geriatric Pregnancy: Child Birth after Menopause

A woman’s “prime” fertility is around the age of 25 years, plus or minus a few years. However she can become pregnant anytime after her first ovulation cycle up until her last ovulation cycle, then she hits menopause (usually around age 50 give or take a few years). The oldest woman to give birth was in her late 60’s, so anything is possible really.

Movie star Halle Berry gave birth at age 47 stating that she thought it wasn’t possible to become pregnant again at that age. Joining her in this miracle are actresses Jennifer Aniston who also became pregnant at age 47, and Kelly Preston also 47 years of age. Preston is quoted touting the “marvels of modern medicine” that enabled her to conceive at an age nearing menopause.

What is Menopause

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her ovulation cycle has ceased and she can no longer become pregnant. This usually happens around age 50, but it can occur much earlier or even much later. It is typically considered that it has occurred when you haven’t ovulated for 12 months.

It is often accompanied with mood swings, hot flashes, urinary complications, vaginal bleeding, fatigue, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Treatment varies with the individuals needs.

Pregnancy after Menopause

It is not possible to become pregnant naturally after menopause. However a woman can still become pregnant after menopause through In Vitro Fertilization. Since a woman no longer produces eggs after menopause she will have to either use donor eggs or to have previously frozen her own eggs prior to reaching menopause.

If you are a cancer patient about to undergo chemotherapy you may want to have your eggs frozen for future use due to the fact that chemotherapy can cause sterility. Likewise, if you have not had children, or think you may want more later in life, then you might want to consider freezing your own eggs to use in IVF procedures.

Signs of Infertility You Didn’t Know About (But Should)

Often it seems that your body will try to tell you if something is wrong. Pain is an indicator of this, getting your attention to the affected area. If you burn yourself cooking, pain signals immediately let you know that has happened, and where on your body it has happened. But sometimes these indicators can be more subtle, and so often they will go unnoticed unless you know what to look for. For example, signs that could be telling you about fertility problems may go unnoticed because you don’t know what to look for.

Signs of infertility

Difficulties during menstruation such as experiencing pain during, a period that seems to never end, or failure to have a period can all be indicators of infertility. Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) can attribute to infertility.

Thyroid

Your thyroid is responsible for producing hormones that control your ovulation and menstruation cycles, so if it isn’t working correctly this can lead to infertility. Signs of hypothyroidism are having cold hands and feet, constipation, dry skin, fatigue, and memory loss.

Obesity

Obesity is an indicator of potential fertility problems. If your BMI is 30-40 you stand a very good chance of experiencing infertility due to being overweight.

Leaks

Leaking nipples are another indicator of problems, (Hyperprolactinemia). Unless you are pregnant or just gave birth you should not be lactating. This comes from an excessive amount of the hormone prolactin.

PCOS

If you are a female, generally you shouldn’t have an excessive amount of facial hair. Very thin, fine fuzz is one thing, but if you need a shave then it’s likely that you have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). Another sign of this is that if you are losing hair from areas that you should have a lot, such as your scalp. Acne and problems with menstruation can also be indicators of PCOS.

STD’s

If you have a history of STD’s, specifically gonorrhea, you may have problems with fertility. The problem is that many women do not show symptoms of this STD. Symptoms can be pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, and bleeding mid cycle. If you have had unprotected sex and think you may be at risk, ask your OB to be tested.

An Overview of Female Fertility Testing and Diagnosis

Before seeking out a make me fertile pharmacy, it’s important to understand for sure why you’re having difficulty becoming pregnant. This information will be valuable for choosing the right IVF medications later on.

When to Start Testing

According to the Center for Disease Control, roughly 1 in 8 couples have difficulty becoming pregnant, making infertility a very common medical issue.

If you’re a woman under 35 years of age, endocrinologists recommend that you consider fertility testing if you haven’t conceived after 12 months of trying. If you’re over 35, they recommend testing if you haven’t conceived after 6 months. This is due to a sense of urgency for older women, since earlier medical intervention will be essential for increasing the chances of successful conception later on.

Female Fertility Testing

What to Expect

You can refer to IHR.com’s directory of fertility clinics to find an endocrinologist in your area. Generally, they will require a medical history and complete physical exam to start. What additional tests you take will depend on your endocrinologist. They may check your hormone levels with blood or urine tests, examine your cervical health with a Pap smear, or evaluate LH surges with a urine test.

If necessary, the doctor may ask for additional testing. A basal body temperature test is a common way to determine if you are releasing eggs. You may end up continuing this test on your own as a part of your fertility treatment.

The doctor may need to sample some tissue of the uterine lining by performing an endometrial biopsy. This will also indicate if eggs have been released or if there are any problems with the amount of progesterone you’re producing.

Some women require an ultrasound to identify any fibroids or cysts in the ovaries or uterus that might be responsible for the infertility. Lastly, a post-coital test may be necessary to see if your cervical mucous is a hostile environment for sperm.

More Complex Tests

If the tests described above are inconclusive, the doctor may require more complex analyses to determine the cause of your fertility issues.

For women who may have endometriosis or some fallopian tube scarring, a laparoscopy will be necessary. This involves making one incision at the pubic bone and one at the navel, then injecting the stomach with carbon dioxide. The doctor will insert a laparoscope into the enlarged stomach and a probe through the other opening. This allows the doctor to see your ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus to check for problems.

The doctor may perform a hysterosalpingogram to see if your fallopian tubes are blocked. She will do this by injecting dye into your uterus, and using an X-ray to watch the passage of the dye through the fallopian tubes. If you have fibroid tumors, structural abnormalities or endometrial polyps, this test can also help identify them.
